This article explains sugar-free gum, mints and lozenges with xylitol.
- Sugar causes tooth decay.
- Xylitol is a sweetener. It also lowers the germs that cause decay.
- It is safe, but too much can upset the stomach.
Gum or mints?
- Gum makes more saliva (spit), which protects teeth. But it is messy and can be swallowed. It may not suit people with dentures or loose or weak teeth.
- Mints, lozenges and wafers are not messy. They suit people who cannot chew well or who have dentures or braces. They make less saliva.
How much
- Up to 6 pieces of gum a day, chewed slowly after meals or snacks.
- Or up to 12 small mints or lozenges a day, sucked slowly after meals or snacks.
- Throw gum away carefully.
- Do not let dogs eat xylitol. It is poisonous to them.
