For a person who is ill, or receiving palliative or end-of-life care, a clean dish cloth, soft 360 degree sponge can be used to gently clean a person’s mouth, teeth and gums. Cleaning a person’s mouth will reduce the bacterial load, remove food debris, and improve well-being and quality of life.

A surround brush may also be used in situations of challenging opening.

Be sure to wear fresh disposable gloves. Moisten the soft cloth or 360 degree sponge and ask permission, and explain that you will be cleaning the person’s teeth and gums. By moistening the lips and cheeks, it will make it easier to move the cloth around the mouth, wiping off excessive food debris and plaque. Be gently but as thorough as possible.
