This article explains how to clean around a dental implant.

  • An implant is a metal screw in the jaw that holds a false tooth.
  • Implants can fail if they are not kept clean. Germs can damage the gum and bone that hold the implant.
  • The screw is thinner than the tooth on top, like a mushroom. Food and germs can get trapped under the tooth.

How to clean

  • Toothbrush: use a small, soft brush (electric is best). Gently brush around the tooth and just under the gum. Do not scrub.
  • Small single-tuft brush: for hard-to-reach spots.
  • Interdental brush: choose one that fits the gap. Not too big (it can hurt) and not too small (it will not clean).
  • Implant floss: slide it between the teeth, hold it against the implant and gently pull it under the gum. The floss may go quite far under the tooth. This is normal and this area needs cleaning.
  • Water flosser: can help wash out spaces.

Have implants checked and cleaned by a dental professional regularly.
