• Poor mouth health in older people can cause pneumonia (a lung infection), hospital visits, pain, weight loss and people avoiding food and others.
• Problems include cost, staff knowledge, training and getting the right products.
• Most Certificate III aged care courses do not teach mouth care.
• ACU and Amelo Dental are testing an app-based plan at 5 Southern Cross Care homes in Queensland.
• The app is made by dentists. It teaches staff and helps get the right products to residents. Families can use it too.
• The goal is to use it across Australia.
